Cartoons with some actual effort put in ?

July 5, 2010

Ok by now you may have guessed i’m a comic nerd (don’t worry no Kick Ass heroics) and i’ve been lately sampling other media outlets for my favourite capes and costumes since i’m at a lose end from finishing college. So I ocassionally check out the cartoon variety and of course I have some views to take back. Almost a two years ago I checked the first episode in the Legion of Superheros cartoon and honestly I was unimpressed with the cliche edition of morals, the Peter Parker like Clark Kent and the story was so many holes in it looked like Goku after a punch up with Radditz. However with me at a lose end and all I decided to give it a second chance mainly to see the suitably over powered 41st century clone of Superman and long haired Superman X with all his powers and more and no weakness to Kryptonite. After wacthing episodes which interest I found a few cool characters among the nerdy hapeless ones like Matter Eating lad and actually enjoyed the dry wit and strong story telling as time went on despite a few holes and ‘oh come on !’ moments like Brainiac deciding after the evil villain takes over and their first battle to get Superman.

 – The brooding Superman X, krptonite free and able to use it as a weapon alongside energy shields- a product of K3NT (a robot with the personalities of Ma and Pa Kent)

So I admit I was little disapointed after the finale and such a promising ending with unanswered questions that it was canceled and more likely the creative and production team were set to work on the irrtatingly camp and backwards Batman Brave and the Bold (which is good for intorducing new characters but soooo camp I want go and hide in a tent).

But looking forward to the future it seems finally writers are taking cartoon writing seriously again harking back to the Batman of the 90’s and Spawn putting effort in fresh stories which don’t preach and aren’t all real world proof. The two i’m looking forward to are :

1. Young Justice (Later realeased this year): I loved the comics humour from this Teen Titan spin off consiting of sidekicks and bringing in a few Jusitce league mini me’s along the way. I’ve been a big fan of Superboy and was irritated to find little material for him the UK so hoepfully this’ll be enlighting, same for Impulse plus I love his costume in the promos. Plus the line up sticks pretty close to the comics with a few cool aditions like the new Aqualad and promising Miss Martian . It’s promised to be more aimed at teen’s so probaly more real life situations like Robin growing a  beard perhaps ?

2. Avengers: Earths Mightiest heroes: In line with the trend breaking Avengers film on the horzion it’s time for some product tie-ins so bring on the cartoon !, albeit the animation looks a little childish and rushed I was turned around with the trailer showing strong action and no silly humour either. One to wacth and fingers crossed for Hawkeye and over small time heroes.

For our final college project we created a website and ran a marketing campaign. We were also as students told to submit any work good and suitable to be put on the wesbite. So follow the link to my Facebook article written in 2009, the title was changed from Is it time you faced up to things ? to Are you a junkie ?. (clearly contributions were low for mine to get on. Well their my slef loathing kick down for the day)
